Information about the Reading Log: Note: This will start later in the year.
What is the purpose (goal) of the reading log? The reading log is design to keep students accountable and engaged in nightly reading. It is a tool that serves as a guideline to help students increase their rate (how fast they read), accuracy (are they saying the words correctly) and fluency (the flow of the reading - smooth reading or choppy reading). It also helps improve their comprehension. The ultimate goal, is for your child to become a lifelong reader.
What are the requirements? The requirements are reading a specified number of pages and writing a short summary.
How many nights is my child to read? The reading log offers seven nights of reading - however the student is only responsible for choosing 5 nights out of the 7 nights to read. Students are busy with many other activities such as sports, church, scouts, that are outside of school, so giving them the freedom to choose those 5 nights, is a great tool to ensure they can meet the requirement.
How many pages are to be read each night? At the beginning of the year, to get us back in the swing of things, the requirement will only be 2 pages per night. However, as we progress in our reading skills, the number of pages will increase. This increase is usually at the beginning of each term and will be noted on the reading log.
What is required for the summary part of the Reading Log? For each night's reading, students are to write a short summary of what is happening on those pages; this is usually 1 to 2 good sentences. A good sentence, has correct capitalization and punctuation.
What should my child read for the Reading Log? Your child should have a library book, that is suited to their level of reading in order for them to read independently. Along with those library books, some students, from time to time, like to read from a magazine, or an article off of the internet that may interest them. Remember the goal is to get your child to read!
Can I read with (to) my child? Absolutely! This is a great way to model a wonderful habit for your child. If you take turns each reading a page or a paragraph, that is great. But please do remember, that the goal is to have the child read and you are there to serve as a support to them.
When are the reading logs due? The reading logs are due each Monday.
When are new reading logs handed out to the students? Students receive new reading logs each Monday.
So, Monday they turn in a reading log for the previous week's reading, and then receive a new Reading Log on which to begin work for the current week.
